Hello my brothers and sisters, Good afternoon and greetings to all of us. I hope you all continue to be given health and blessings by God. We are a punk rock band from Medan, Indonesia. Today will bring a reggae song that was turned into Punk Rock. The song is entitled “Serenada” which was popularized by Steven and Coconuttreez.
“Aku ingin nyanyikan lagu
Buat orang-orang yang tertindas
Hidup di alam bebas
Dengan jiwa yang terpapas
Kenapa harus takut pada matahari?
Kepalkan tangan dan halau setiap panasnya
Kenapa harus takut pada malam hari?
Nyalakan api dalam hati, usiri segala kelamnya
Aku ingin nyanyikan lagu
Bagi kaum-kaum yang terbuang
Kehilangan semangat juang
Terlena dalam mimpi panjang
Di lorong-lorong jalan
Di kolong-kolong jembatan
Di kaki-kaki lima
Di bawah menara
Kau masih mendekap derita
Aku ingin nyanyikan lagu
Tanpa kemiskinan dan kemunafikan
Tanpa air mata dan kesengsaraan
Agar dapat melihat surga”
“I want to sing a song
For the oppressed
Living in the wild
With a broken soul
Why should you be afraid of the sun?
Make a fist and dispel every heat
Why should you be afraid at night?
Light a fire in your heart, drive away all the darkness
I want to sing a song
For the outcasts
Losing fighting spirit
Lost in a long dream
In the alleys
Under the bridge
On the sidewalks
Under the tower
You're still holding the pain
I want to sing a song
Without poverty and hypocrisy
Without tears and misery
To see heaven”

Many people don't know that this song has been around for a long time. People thought that this song belonged to the reggae band "Steven and Coconuttreez". In fact, this song was created by a community of street singers and was sung by a legendary Indonesian musician "Iwan Fals" in 1984. At that time this song was not very well known and was never even published in electronic media. Until 2005, Steven and Coconuttreez performed this song and it was included in the album "The Other Side", so this song was sung again by many people.
From the lyrics above, this song is dedicated to lower-class people whose lives are not clear where they are going. As we know that poverty, injustice, and social inequality are still around us. They are abandoned and neglected people. They must be able to withstand the harsh blows of life that constantly hit them. This song is just to cheer them up for a short break in the battle of life. I hope this song that we bring can also cheer you up even though we carry it with a punk feel full of anger.
Below is a reggae version of the song sung by Steven and Coconuttreez.
