Hey Folks
Today I want to take a shot at a song called Dirty Old Town by Ewan MacColl.
Ewan was one of the people most influencial in the 1960s folk song revival and this song I want to sing for you today is one of his most well known.
The song was written about the town of Salford in England where MaColl was born and raised but over the years it has been performed by many Irish artists like The Dubliners and The Pougues. This has caused the song to have an unofficial conection to the city of Dublin in Ireland.
"Dirty Old Town"
Ewan MaColl
I found my love where the gaslight falls
Dreamed a dream by the old canal
Kissed my girl by the factory wall
Dirty old town, dirty old town
Clouds are drifting across the moon
Cats are prowling on their beat
Springs a girl in the streets at night
Dirty old town, dirty old town
I heard her sigh from the decks
Saw a train set the night on fire
Smelled the spring on the smoky wind
Dirty old town, dirty old town
I'm going to take a good sharp ax
Shining steel tempered in the fire
We'll chop you down like an old dead tree
Dirty old town, dirty old town
I found my love where the gaslight falls
Dreamed a dream by the old canal
Kissed my girl by the factory wall
Dirty old town, dirty old town
