El Velorio de la Cruz de Mayo es una fiesta popular venezolana, es un tributo a la naturaleza y el poder creador que nos regala, año tras año. la primavera. Es una fiesta pagana, adornada con símbolos católicos.

El 4 de mayo se celebró esta emotiva ceremonia en el Organopónico Bolívar 1 de la avenida México, en la ciudad de Caracas, el vivero público más bonito de la ciudad, y donde también he hecho trabajo voluntario; sembrando y cosechando.

Cuando ya las cruces (o maderos, como lo llaman tradicionalmente) estaban montadas, comenzaron los rezos y la música, en el Velorio de la Cruz de mayo, se preparan liturgias, pero en realidad, se trata de un sincretismo o apropiación de rituales enfocados a dar gracias a la tierra por la fertilidad, estos ritos están vinculados a una aparición en el cielo nocturno de una constelación en forma de cruz llamada Crux del sur. Desde tiempos remotos, las tribus sudamericanas asociaban la llegada de ésta constelación con la entrada de las lluvias, y la recuperación del verdor y la fertilidad de la tierra.
