Las Saturday, I had the chance to attend Semblanzas Cumanesas, a concert in memoriam of Remigio "Morocho" Fuentes, one of the best (if not the greatest) mandolin players of Venezuelan folklore. Morochito, as he was best known, was born in a small town up in hill of Montes Municipality in Sucre State, Venezuela. With his mandolin and music, he traveled around the world leaving the name of Venezuela and Sucre State wherever he set foot and played.

Over the years, there's been many homages for Morocho. Now that he's departed, there will be plenty more. He was a good friend to musicians and the general public. He was a genius with his instrument. He never played the same tunes in the same way twice. His compositions and wits will be remembered for many years to come.

As a personal anecdote, I have to say I had the chance to play alongside him many years ago during the May Festivities of "La Cruz de Mayo" (a harvest festival I have explained previously). Any friend Alberto (a partner from the musical groups of UDO) was with me as well. I remember Morocho telling us he had to be careful or we would score his jobs. By the time this happened, I had never met him in person but I had listened to his music thousands of times. Getting Know him was a completely different story. It is a memory I look upon happily. Even if I do not play the mandolin any longer. He made me admire mandolin players even more.

As an added bonus to this concert, I had the chance to listen to one of my instruments on stage. I must admit it was quite a Saturday! Listening to his compositions and having one of my instruments be part of that music makes me feel proud. And it's almost like I'm playing alongside him once again.

I hope his music lives on forever and, with time, more of my instruments become part of the tradition that keeps on his compositions alive.
