Agroecological Education in Carayaca Port

Today I am going to share with you the record of fieldwork that I did with my colleagues who studied with me on a diploma course on unilateral coercive measures, this was the final activity of the diploma course.

What was I doing in Puerto Carayaca?

The objective was to learn about the experience of the town called Puerto Carayaca in which they integrated the academic work of the Universidad Nacional Experimental de la Gran Caracas, UNEXCA, its teachers and students with the inhabitants of the community to convert the nucleus of the university into a productive center capable of feeding the families that participate in the work of the land and at the same time commercialize their products to economically sustain the activities of this university.

What are you trying to do here to have a self-sustainable and ecological project?

The academic activity is concentrated in the agroecological area to overcome the obstacles of food production and the education of young people who like the area so that they can study without leaving their village.

How did we get there?

To leave for this experience we met in the center of Caracas with the intention of leaving at 7:30 in the morning on a bus with 20 people. We took the La Guaira road that crosses the mountains surrounding the valley of Caracas to take us to the coast of the Caribbean Sea.

The state of La Guaira has only one municipality, you could say that we arrived at the center of it where is Maiquetia, where the airport that serves the city of Caracas is located, and you can choose to take roads to the east towards Macuto, Caraballeda, Naiguata, and Los Caracas and all the towns of the green view to Chuspa.

We took the road to the west, passed through Catia La Mar, and followed the road, after an hour and 10 minutes we arrived at Puerto Carayaca which geographically is a formidable place because it is a mountain village at the foot of the sea.

What did I know about this place?

What I had previously heard about this place is that from here there is a nearby road to get to El Junquito and Colonia Tovar, which are beautiful tourist places. And also that the land in the area is very rich for planting and therefore there is a lot of agricultural potentials.

For this reason, in response to the population's demand for the university to open a teaching center, the academic branch to be developed here was agroecology, and soon they will be starting a veterinary career, which is also very relevant for the area.

How are you managing to prepare yourselves?

It could be said that the career is totally technical because from the beginning the students are dedicated to practicing everything they have learned on the land, also something to highlight is that the classroom is open to nature, I had the impression that the infrastructure was half built, and maybe it is so, but it is a decision of everyone who does not want to be locked in a classroom with a blackboard and they will always see their classes like this, indoors but open to the field.

How will they get organic crops?

The most important thing I could appreciate from this experience is the vision of harvesting organic products, they are striving to ensure that the cultivation processes, from the preparation of the soil, are ecological, and totally free of pesticides and chemical fertilizers.

One of the strategies that I could observe in the planting work is the action of growing some medicinal plants with repellent properties so that their power to repel insects and pests keeps these threats at bay from the crops of interest, as we saw for example in the planting of eggplants some plants of chives and oregano orejon alternating.

We were able to see several sections of crops, some vegetables where the aforementioned eggplants were grown, as well as peppers and chili peppers to name a few. In another section of medicinal plants where I saw lemongrass, lemon balm, and mint. And another very beautiful section where they planted sunflowers.

The idea of this being a sustainable project has the hope that not only the professors and students participate, in addition to the university authorities who are also present, but also the community, which in this way is looking for a way to organize itself, to overcome obstacles and be responsible for its development.

Geographical advantages

All this scenery has as a background the Caribbean Sea in all its splendor that can be appreciated in a captivating way from a considerable height that makes the climate in the village with a temperature that can drop to 15º, being very sunny during the day.

Near the town, down to the coast, there are beautiful beaches, in fact, much of the route goes along the coast of the state of La Guaira. This makes me think that they could also develop a sustainable ecological tourism project.

My Hope

I hope that when I have the opportunity to return to Puerto Carayaca the project will be consolidated and will already represent one of the main means of livelihood in this privileged town.

Hoy voy a compartir con ustedes el registro de un trabajo de campo que realicé con los compañeros que estudiaron conmigo un diplomado sobre medidas coercitivas unilaterales, esta fue la actividad final del diplomado.

¿Qué estaba haciendo en puerto Carayaca?

El objetivo fue conocer la experiencia del pueblo llamado Puerto Carayaca en el que integraron el trabajo académico de la Universidad Nacional Experimental de la Gran Caracas, UNEXCA, sus docentes y estudiantes con los habitantes de la comunidad para convertir el núcleo de la universidad en un centro productivo capaz de alimentar a las familias que participan en el trabajo de las tierras y a la vez comercializar sus productos para sostener económicamente las actividades de esta universidad.

¿Qué están tratando de hacer aquí para tener un proyecto auto sustentable y ecológico?

La actividad académica está concentrada en el área agroecológica para superar los obstáculos de la producción alimentaria y la educación de los jóvenes que les gusta el área para que puedan estudiar sin salir de su pueblo.

¿Cómo llegamos?

Para salir a esta experiencia nos reunimos en el centro de Caracas con la intención de salir a las 7:30 de la mañana en un autobús 20 personas. Tomamos la vía de La Guaira que atraviesa las montañas que rodean el valle de Caracas para llevarnos a la costa del Mar Caribe.

El estado la Guaira tiene un solo municipio, se podría decir que llegamos al centro de este dónde está Maiquetía, lugar donde se encuentra el aeropuerto que sirve a la Ciudad de Caracas, y se puede optar por tomar vías al este hacia Macuto, Caraballeda, Naiguatá y Los Caracas y todos los pueblos de la vista verde hasta Chuspa.

Nosotros tomamos la vía hacia el oeste, pasamos por Catia La Mar y seguimos la vía, luego de una hora y 10 minutos llegamos a Puerto Carayaca que geográficamente es un lugar formidable porque es un pueblo de montaña al pie del mar.

¿Qué sabia yo de este lugar?

Lo que había escuchado previamente de este lugar es que desde aquí sale una vía cercana para llegar a El Junquito y a la Colonia Tovar, que son lugares turísticos hermosos. Y también que las tierras de la zona son muy ricas para la siembra y por eso hay mucho potencial agrícola.

Es por ese motivo que ante la demanda de la población para que la universidad abriera un núcleo docente, aquí se estudió que la rama académica a desarrollar era la agroecológica y próximamente están por iniciar la carrera de veterinaria, que también es muy pertinente para la zona.

¿Cómo están logrando prepararse?

Se podría decir que la carrera es totalmente técnica porque desde que inician los estudiantes se dedican a practicar en la tierra todo lo aprendido, además algo que destacar es que el salón de clases es abierto a la naturaleza, me dio la impresión de que la infraestructura estaba a medio construir, y tal vez es así, pero ya es una decisión de todos que no quieren encerrarse en un aula con pizarrón y siempre van a ver sus clases así, bajo techo pero abierto al campo.

¿Cómo obtendrán cultivos orgánicos?

La más importante que pude apreciar de esta experiencia es la visión de cosechar productos orgánicos, se están esforzando por garantizar que los procesos de cultivo, desde la preparación de la tierra, sean ecológicos, totalmente libres de pesticidas y fertilizantes químicos.

Una de las estrategias que pude observar en el trabajo de la siembra es la acción de cultivar algunas plantas medicinales con propiedades repelentes, de manera que su poder para repeler insectos y plagas mantenga a estas amenazas a raya de los cultivos de interés, así vimos por ejemplo en una siembra de berenjenas algunas plantas de cebollín y de orégano orejón alternadas.

Pudimos ver varias secciones de cultivos, algunas de hortalizas donde estaban las mencionadas berenjenas, además de pimentones y ajíes por nombrar algunas. Otra sección de plantas medicinales en las que vi lemongrass, toronjil y hierba buena. Y otra sección muy hermosa en la que plantaron girasoles.

La idea de que este sea un proyecto sustentable tiene las esperanzas puestas en que no solo participan los profesores y estudiantes, además de las autoridades de la universidad que también se hacen presentes, sino también la comunidad, que de esta forma está buscando la manera de organizarse, de superar los obstáculos y ser responsables de su desarrollo.

Ventajas geográficas

Todo este escenario tiene como fondo el mar Caribe en todo su esplendor que se puede apreciar de forma cautivante desde una altura considerable que hace que el clima en el pueblo sea de temperatura que puede bajar hasta 15º, siendo en el día muy soleada.

Cerca del pueblo, bajando hasta la costa, hay playas hermosas, de hecho, buena parte del recorrido va bordeando la costa del estado la Guaira. Esto me hace pensar que también podrían desarrollar algún proyecto de turismo ecológico sustentable.

Mi esperanza

Espero que cuando tenga la oportunidad de volver a Puerto Carayaca el proyecto se haya consolidado y ya represente uno de los principales medios de sustento de este privilegiado pueblo.
