Primera parte: crónica | Part one: chronicle

Hace alrededor de un año, los y las hivers que vivimos en la Argentina nos reunimos en un meetup fundacional cerca del obelisco, en la Ciudad de Buenos Aires. Allí empezamos a conocernos y a seguirnos en Hive, y armamos grupos de chat para mantenernos en contacto. El sábado pasado tuve la oportunidad de reencontrarme en LaBitConf con muchos de los que participamos en aquella oportunidad y con otros hivers que se sumaron ahora o que vinieron desde Venezuela para organizar el evento y apoyarnos como comunidad.

About a year ago, the hivers living in Argentina got together in a foundational meetup near the obelisk, in the city of Buenos Aires. There we started to get to know each other and to follow each other in Hive, and we set up chat groups to keep in touch. Last Saturday I had the opportunity to meet again at LaBitConf with many of us who participated in that opportunity and with other hivers who joined now or who came from Venezuela to organize the event and support us as a community.

Labitconf (Latin American Bitcoin & Blockchain Conference) es probablemente la conferencia cripto más importante de Latinoamérica y la más antigua del mundo. Este año Hive fue uno de los sponsors y tuvo un stand. El ciclo de conferencias duraba dos días, viernes y sábado, pero yo solo pude asistir el sábado.

Labitconf (Latin American Bitcoin & Blockchain Conference) is probably the most important crypto conference in Latin America and the oldest in the world. This year Hive was one of the sponsors and had a booth. The conference series lasted two days, Friday and Saturday, but I was only able to attend on Saturday.

Salimos muy temprano con @lauraptis, porque vivimos a más de 200 km de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires. El paisaje de la zona rural donde vivimos, después de unos días de lluvias fuertes, era así (no, no es una laguna, solo el campo después de la tormenta):

We left very early with @lauraptis, because we live more than 200 km away from the city of Buenos Aires. The landscape of the rural area where we live, after a few days of heavy rains, was like this (no, it's not a lagoon, just the countryside after the storm):

A las pocas horas, estábamos en el predio de Costa Salguero, donde se hizo Labitconf (¡imagínense el contraste!).

Encontrar el stand de Hive fue muy fácil porque tenía una ubicación excelente, muy cerca de la entrada al salón principal. Allí nos encontramos con las organizadoras: @arlettemsalase, @soy-laloreto, @samgiset (un poco más tarde llegó @enrique89) y con los que atendían el stand en el primer turno @aibi93, @lauramica, @vikvitnik. Recibimos nuestra bolsita con el merch (cuaderno, stickers, pulsera) y la remera de Hive.

Finding the Hive booth was very easy because it had an excellent location, very close to the entrance to the main hall. There we met the organizers: @arlettemsalase, @soy-laloreto, @samgiset (a little later @enrique89 arrived) and with those who attended the booth in the first shift @aibi93, @lauramica, @vikvitnik. We received our little bag with the merch (notebook, stickers, bracelet) and the Hive t-shirt.

Fuimos a cambiarnos y como todavía no habíamos desayunado pasamos a tomar un café. Nos llevamos una linda sorpresa de parte de Ripio, que servía café gratis, con masitas de limón o chipás. No uso Ripio, pero ¡muchas gracias de todos modos por el café gratis! Claro que lo gratis tiene su precio, en este caso la larga fila que había que hacer.

We went to change our shirts and since we had not had breakfast yet, we went for a coffee. We got a nice surprise from Ripio, who served free coffee, with lemon pastries or chipás. I don't use Ripio, but thank you very much for the free coffee anyway! Of course, free coffee comes at a price, in this case the long line we had to wait in.

Cuando volvimos, ya casi era nuestro turno. Nos encontramos con @anvivas1, nuestra compañera de stand, y @aibi93 nos dejo algunos consejos e indicaciones. Era nuestra primera vez en un evento de estas características y estábamos un poco nerviosos, pero armamos un equipazo con @anvivas1 y @lauraptis. Se acercó mucha gente, toda con muy buena onda (no hubo ninguna horda de maximalistas indignados de nostr o lens, jaja), y con ganas de conocer acerca de Hive. Muchos se fueron con ganas de crearse una cuenta, desarrollar, publicar o relacionarse de algún modo con nuestra comunidad. Cuando nos daban un respiro, aprovechamos para conocernos con @anvivas1 y con @sponge-bob, que pasó un rato a visitarnos. La pasamos genial, hubo muy buena onda, y eso es importante, porque la gente percibe que hay un equipo de entusiastas, y ese entusiasmo se transmite en cada palabra y en cada gesto. No pudo estar @hosgug, que iba a ser parte del equipo; y lo extrañamos porque sabe un montón acerca de Hive. ¡Ojalá podamos encontrarnos en la próxima!

When we got back, it was almost our turn. We met @anvivas1, our booth partner, and @aibi93 left us some tips and indications. It was our first time at an event like this and we were a bit nervous, but we put together a great team with @anvivas1 and @lauraptis. A lot of people came, all with very good vibes (there was no horde of outraged maximalists from nostr or lens, haha), and eager to learn about Hive. Many left wanting to create an account, develop, publish, or otherwise engage with our community. When they gave us a break, we took the opportunity to meet @anvivas1 and @sponge-bob, who came to visit us for a while. We had a great time, there was a very good vibe, and that is important, because people perceive that there is a team of enthusiasts, and that enthusiasm is transmitted in every word and every gesture. Hosgug, who was going to be part of the team, could not be there, and we missed him because he knows a lot about Hive. Hopefully we will be able to meet him next time!

Una vez que terminó nuestro turno, con @lauraptis almorzamos y nos dedicamos a recorrer un poco los otros stands, volviendo a cada rato al de Hive para ver si necesitaban ayuda y para charlar un rato con los hivers que iban llegando. Lo que nos llamó más la atención es que la mayoría de los stands eran lúdicos: había juegos como el toro mecánico o la lluvia de billetes, ruletas con premios, juegos de preguntas y respuestas, y muchas cosas más para divertirse y ganar premios. Por momentos, ¡se parecía más a una kermese que a un ciclo de conferencias!

Once our turn was over, we had lunch with @lauraptis and we spent some time walking around the other booths, going back to the Hive booth every now and then to see if they needed help and to chat for a while with the hivers that were arriving. What caught our attention was that most of the booths were playful: there were games like the mechanical bull or the rain of bills, roulette wheels with prizes, quiz games, and many other things to have fun and win prizes. At times, it was more like a kermesse than a lecture series!

También había tatuajes en vivo. @lauraptis, @aibi93 y yo sentimos el impulso de tatuarnos, pero ¡logramos mantener la compostura! No nos pudimos resistir, en cambio, al juego en el que había que pulsar botones gigantes que se iluminaban, aunque estuvimos lejos de ganar. @pablo1601 estuvo mucho más cerca de llevarse un premio, pero era más difícil de lo que parecía.

There were also live tattoos. @lauraptis, @aibi93 and I felt the urge to get tattooed, but we managed to keep our composure! We couldn't resist the game where we had to press giant buttons that lit up, although we were far from winning. @pablo1601 came much closer to winning a prize, but it was harder than it looked.

No nos alcanzó el tiempo para ir a ninguna conferencia, pero nos hicimos una escapada para ver a Scott Page.

We didn't have time to go to any conferences, but we did get away to see Scott Page.

Lo más importante para mí fueron las charlas con otros hivers. Seguro que me olvido de alguien, pero tuvimos lindas charlas con @palabras1 y @zutodoterreno, @numa26, @angelica7, @belug, @pablo1601, @enrique89, @samgiset (que además me hizo una pequeña entrevista, ¡qué verguenza!), @littlesorceress, @soy-laloreto, @arlettemsalase y @bananasfallers.

The most important thing for me were the talks with other hivers. I'm sure I'm forgetting someone, but we had nice chats with @palabras1 and @zutodoterreno, @numa26, @angelica7, @belug, @pablo1601, @enrique89, @samgiset (who also did a little interview with me, what a shame!), @littlesorceress, @soy-laloreto, @arlettemsalase y @bananasfallers.

Cuando cerraron los stands, los que quedábamos fuimos a comer y tomar unas cervezas, y después fuimos un rato a divertirnos a la fiesta.

When the stands closed, those of us who were left went to eat and have a few beers, and then we went to the party for a while to have fun.

Nos tuvimos que ir más temprano de lo que hubiéramos querido porque cerraba el estacionamiento donde habíamos dejado el auto y no nos dejaron volver a entrar al predio. De todos modos, seguimos charlando en el auto con @pablo1601 y @angelica7, mientras recorríamos la ciudad.

Ojalá el año que viene Hive vuelva a participar y podamos estar allí nuevamente compartiendo con toda la comunidad argentina y conociendo a más hivers (me quedé con las ganas de conocer a @fermionico, que no pudo estar el sábado). Fue una experiencia muy linda y muy enriquecedora. Y ojalá también nos sirva de impulso para terminar de consolidar la comunidad de Hive Argentina.

We had to leave earlier than we would have liked because the parking lot where we had left the car was closing and they wouldn't let us back into the venue. Anyway, we continued chatting in the car with @pablo1601 and @angelica7, while we toured the city.

Hopefully next year Hive will participate again and we can be there again sharing with the whole Argentine community and meeting more hivers (I was left with the desire to meet @fermionico, who could not be there on Saturday). It was a very nice and enriching experience. And hopefully it will also serve as an impulse to consolidate the Hive Argentina community.

¿Qué es más raro un hiver en Labitconf o un astronauta?
Puede parecer una pregunta extraña, pero no tiene una respuesta sencilla. Ciertamente, un astronauta caminando lentamente por los pasillos de una feria es algo muy raro.

Which is weirder, a Hiver at Labitconf or an astronaut?
It may seem like a strange question, but it doesn't have a simple answer. Certainly, an astronaut walking slowly through the aisles of a trade fair is a very weird thing.

Pero en el fondo, no deja de ser una acción de marketing de una empresa privada. Como la típica persona disfrazada de empanada o de alguna mascota. Detrás del extrañamiento que produce el astronauta, no hay demasiado. Es más de lo mismo, aunque nos esforcemos por ver otra cosa. El astronauta, por cierto, no fue lo único bizarro en Labitconf. Había también personas disfrazadas con motosierras de cartón (los que siguen la política argentina sabrán de qué se trata), cosplayers de diverso tipo... y hivers. ¿Y qué tiene de raro un hiver en un evento cripto? Parecería que nada. Somos gente normal o algo por el estilo. Llevamos una remera sobria, negra, con un matecito tradicional. Estamos en el universo cripto, exactamente igual que todos en la conferencia. Y, sin embargo, somos raros. Y yo no me había dado cuenta hasta que me paré detrás del mostrador, me puse en el papel de uno de los representantes de Hive ante el mundo entero y empecé a hablar y a escuchar a la gente. Y la gente hace preguntas que muchas veces parecen inocentes, pero que nos muestran lo raros que somos. Preguntas sencillas, como...

—¿Ustedes qué venden?

But in the end, it is still a marketing action of a private company. Like the typical person disguised as a pie or a mascot. Behind the strangeness produced by the astronaut, there is not much. It's more of the same, even if we try hard to see something else. The astronaut, by the way, was not the only bizarre thing at Labitconf. There were also people dressed up with cardboard chainsaws (those who follow Argentine politics will know what this is all about), cosplayers of various kinds... and hivers. And what's so weird about a hiver at a crypto event? Nothing, it would seem. We are normal people or something like that. We wear a sober, black t-shirt, with a traditional matecito. We are in the crypto universe, just like everyone else at the conference. And yet we're weird. And I didn't realize it until I stood behind the counter, put myself in the role of one of Hive's representatives to the whole world and started talking and listening to people. And people ask questions that often seem innocent, but show us how weird we are. Simple questions, like:
"What do you sell?"

No fue "¿Ustedes venden algo o hacen otra cosa?". No, eso no está siquiera dentro del abanico de posibilidades. No, nada de eso. Fue sencillamente: "¿Ustedes qué venden?". Hice un repaso mental de los stands por los que había pasado. Todos o casi todos vendían algo. Incluso el café gratis lo servía una empresa que vende algo.

It wasn't "Do you sell something or do you do something else?". No, that's not even in the range of possibilities. No, nothing like that. It was simply, "What do you sell?". I did a mental review of the booths I had passed by. All or almost all of them were selling something. Even the free coffee was served by a company that sells something.

—No, nosotros no vendemos nada. Hive es...

La cara de incomprensión. ¿De verdad que no venden nada? ¿Dónde está la trampa? ¿Por qué me estás hablando si no querés venderme nada? Es sospechoso. Casi que da miedo que alguien te hable para no venderte nada. Vender y comprar es lo natural dentro de una sociedad como la nuestra. Si no me estás vendiendo nada, entonces hay algo raro. Sos raro. Y no sé si quiero hablar con vos. Prefiero abrazar a un astronauta porque el astronauta me vende algo. Me tranquiliza, en serio, el astronauta me tranquiliza, me da una paz espacial.

The face of incomprehension. You really don't sell anything? What's the catch? Why are you talking to me if you don't want to sell me anything? It's suspicious. It's almost scary that someone is talking to you not to sell you anything. Selling and buying is natural in a society like ours. If you are not selling me anything, then there is something strange. You are weird. And I don't know if I want to talk to you. I'd rather hug an astronaut because the astronaut is selling me something. En el stand de Hive, en cambio, no vendemos nada. Queremos que te hagas una cuenta de Hive, claro, porque Hive es genial y queremos compartirlo. At the Hive booth, on the other hand, we don't sell anything. We want you to get a Hive account, of course, because Hive is great and we want to share it. And, if you get a Hive account and share your content, Hive will be even cooler. And do you have to put money in? I think you're going to get money out of me somehow. If you sell me something, I give you money and I get something in return, but if you don't, it's a scam for sure. A ponzi scheme or something. Y el corazón de cripto es así. Hay un núcleo de rareza rarísima. Bitcoin es rarísimo. Nadie sabe quién lo creó. No hay ninguna empresa que sea dueña de Bitcoin. No tiene CEO.

And we want you to publish or to develop or to read. We want you to be hiver, we want you to be weird in our style. Or weird as hell. Weird in a sober T-shirt. One of the worst. And the heart of crypto is like that. There is a core of rarest weirdness. Bitcoin is very rare. No one knows who created it. There is no company that owns Bitcoin. It has no CEO.

—La comunidad. Hive nace de un hardfork...

—No, no tenemos CEO. Somos un proyecto desarrollado por la comunidad...

Quizás no estemos en el top 10 de coinmarketcap. Pero ¿cuántos proyectos cripto pueden decir esto así, frente a frente, sin un casco de astronauta de por medio? Basta recorrer la feria para darse cuenta de que son todas empresas privadas que quieren vender algo. No digo que esté mal vender cosas. Solo digo que Hive es diferente. Que no te damos la gorrita a cambio de que seas nuestro nuevo cliente. No te hacemos un descuento en las comisiones o en la suscripción anual. Y, si querés, Hive es una shitcoin. Ok. Llamala como quieras. Pero que algo tenga recompensas en satoshis a través de lightning network no lo hace descentralizado. Bitcoin es genial, Ethereum es genial. No todo lo que se construye a partir de ahí es genial. Hive es genial y funciona. Sin costo por transacción, a la velocidad del rayo.

We may not be in coinmarketcap's top 10. But how many crypto projects can say this like this, face to face, without an astronaut's helmet in between? You only have to walk around the expo to realize that these are all private companies that want to sell something. I'm not saying it's wrong to sell stuff. I'm just saying that Hive is different. That we don't give you the beanie in exchange for you being our new customer. We don't give you a discount on commissions or annual subscription. And, if you want, Hive is a shitcoin. Ok. Call it whatever you want. But just because something has rewards in satoshis through lightning network doesn't make it decentralized. Bitcoin is cool, Ethereum is cool. Not everything built from there is great. Hive is great and it works. No cost per transaction, lightning fast.

Y es que en el fondo todos somos un poco raros. Porque las personas todavía formamos comunidades y nos apoyamos unas a otras. Y también ganamos plata a cambio de nuestro esfuerzo, de nuestro contenido, de nuestro trabajo. No son cosas opuestas. No quiero venderte nada. Ni siquiera quiero que votes mi contenido. Tal vez no te guste lo que escribo. No hay problema. De todos modos quiero que vengas a Hive.

Wonderful. Because, in the end, when we explain to people what Hive is, they understand us. Or so I want to believe. Some people don't care, of course. But others seem really enthusiastic. And that's because deep down we're all a bit weird. Because people still form communities and support each other. And we also earn money in exchange for our effort, our content, our work. They are not opposites. I don't want to sell you anything. I don't even want you to vote for my content. Maybe you don't like what I write. That's not a problem. I want you to come to Hive anyway.
