In the area where I live, vultures are part of the fauna that can be observed. What do you associate the vulture with? Perhaps, like many, the first thing that comes to mind is a carrion bird, grim looking and associated with dead things. But you may also remember other things, such as its superlative stomach in the animal kingdom, capable of processing spoiled food and nothing happens to the animal! But recently I was observing a lot of them, and with my phone I was filming them for a while. Today I want to tell you about it.

First, I apologize for the quality of the images, but I think my phone must be pushed to the extreme to capture this scene. I think it did a lot. But on the way out of the house we saw a lot of vultures flying overhead. I thought, "There must be a dead animal out there." And a few days later I found out that a neighbor had killed a carcass and they were just preparing everything outdoors, and then I knew that the birds were there precisely because of that.

However, I was enraptured watching how they flew overhead with apparent harmony. It was deceptive to see them, because thanks to their great height one had the sensation that they were flying smoothly through the skies. If you look at the pictures, they were not flapping their wings, but rather, they were fully extended and gliding. So they were flying effortlessly, they were just being carried by the air currents. It was something wonderful.

In the video I also include footage of a single vulture that I filmed several days ago, when I was hiking on a nearby mountain. It looked like it was watching me and making sure I wasn't a threat. But what strikes me is how it glides through the air and suddenly changes its speed. There you can see the speed better because I was higher up and could see the bird at close range.

All birds have a special design. There is a lot of wisdom involved, and it is only when we observe and study that we can realize it (if we are humble). These vultures have reminded me that they are able to detect possible food at a great distance. That they are able to fly with many others without hindering each other, on the contrary, streaking the sky with sinuous silhouettes that make the day different. That they take advantage of what they have (the air currents) to manage their energies and preserve their flight.

I consider myself fortunate to have been able to observe this for free, with these animals in freedom, and to meditate on what they teach us. The vulture is part of our feathered friends.

En la zona donde vivo, los zamuros es parte de la fauna que se puede observar. ¿Con qué relacionas al zamuro? Tal vez, como muchos, lo primero que se le viene a la mente es un ave de carroña, con un aspecto sombrío y asociada a cosas muertas. Pero también puede que recuerdes otras cosas, como su estómago superlativo en el reino animal, capaz de procesar alimentos descompuestos ¡y no le pasa nada al animal! Pero recientemente estuve observando una gran cantidad de ellos, y con mi teléfono estuve filmándolos un rato. Hoy quiero hablarles de eso.

Primero, pido disculpas por la calidad de las imágenes, pero creo que mi teléfono debe llevarse al extremo para poder capturar ésta escena. Creo que mucho hizo. Pero al salir fuera de la casa vimos como sobrevolaban muchos zamuros. Pensé: "Debe haber un animal muerto por ahí". Y a los días supe que un vecino había matado a una res y justamente estaban preparando todo al aire libre, y entonces supe que las aves estaban allí precisamente por eso.

Sin embargo, quedé embelesado viendo cómo sobrevolaban con aparente armonía. Era engañoso verlos, porque gracias a la gran altura que tenían uno tenía la sensación de que volaban suavemente por los cielos. Si te fijas en las imágenes, poco batían sus alas, más bien, las extendían plenamente y planeaban. Así que estaban volando sin esfuerzo, sólo se dejaban llevar por las corrientes de aire. Era algo maravilloso.

En el video también incluyo imágenes de un zamuro solo que filmé varios días atrás, cuando hice senderismo por una montaña aledaña. Parecía que estaba vigilándome y asegurándose que no fuera una amenaza. Pero lo que me impacta es como planea por los aires y cambia su velocidad repentinamente. Allí se puede ver mejor la velocidad porque yo estaba más alto y podía ver a ese ejemplar a poca distancia.

Todas las aves tienen un diseño especial. Hay mucha sabiduría implicada, y sólo cuando observamos y estudiamos es que podemos darnos cuenta (si somos humildes). Éstos zamuros me han recordado que son capaces de detectar posibles alimentos a mucha distancia. Que son capaces de sobrevolar junto a muchos más sin entorpecerse entre sí, por el contrario, rayando el cielo con sinuosas siluetas que hacen diferente el día. Que aprovechan lo que tienen (las corrientes de aire) para administrar sus energías y conservar su vuelo.

Me considero afortunado de poder haber observado esto gratis, con esos animales en libertad, y meditar en lo que ellos nos enseñan. El zamuro es parte de nuestros amigos emplumados.
